When writer and illustrator David Shannon was five years old, he wrote a semi-autobiographical story of a little kid who broke all his mother's rules. Years later, it became the basis for his 1999 Caldecott Honor book, No, David! (which went on to be named a New York Times Best Illustrated Book, a School Library Journal Best Book, and an American Bookseller Pick of the Lists) and its sequels, David Goes to School and David Gets In Trouble.
